The night will be over soon. Aurora, the red sky of dawn, stretches one last time before getting up. But Sonno, the god of sleep, rest and peace, has not admitted defeat yet. He orders his three servants to appear to humans in their dreams. They pour happy dreams and fantastic apparitions into their eyes. The prologue to Cavalli’s opera «Gli amori d’Apollo e di Dafne» has provided Italian director Alessandra Premoli with inspiration for her production in Innsbruck featuring shadow play. «This concept of the world which constantly challenges reality can be found in the plays of Calderón, Lope de Vegas and Shakespeare.» And in Cavalli’s early operas as well. The tonal languages of Aurora, Dafne and Amore oscillate between light and shadow in a nuanced manner.

The ensemble of Barockoper:Jung performs on the stage of the Faculty of Theology in front of the shadow theatre of Altretracce, whose silent dancers appear to have a hold on the singers using mysterious signs and ghost-like movements. Dafne prefers the world of shadows and death to the world of light and love. Her most prized possession is a heart free from the power of love. The loveliest of all the nymphs thus eludes the affection of the divine shining light of Apollo and lets herself be turned into a laurel tree. «She doesn’t want to feel, touch or speak any more. Just like a shadow,» comments Premoli.
