Public concerts in German-speaking countries actually originated in a coffee house! In the "Zimmermannisches Caffee-Hauß" on the elegant Catherinenstraße behind the Leipziger Marktplatz, the enterprising café owner Gottfried Zimmermann hosted concerts with the Collegium musicum in a room that could accommodate up to 150 guests. The visitors to the coffee house were not only able to feast on delicious drinks and food, but also on musical delicacies. Johann Sebastian Bach, his sons, pupils and students were part of the ensemble's regular line-up. The French ensemble Café Zimmermann named itself after this first public concert institution and dedicates itself mainly to the repertoire that was played there.
