Other rulers gave their wives jewellery, robes or palaces; Duke Alfonso II d’Este of Ferrara gave his third wife, Margherita Gonzaga, madrigals as a gift. From Mantua and Ferrara, he engaged singers and instrumentalists. For this «Concerto delle Donne», court composer Luzzasco Luzzaschi had to compose one to three-part madrigals for the vocal range of the singers. Almost every evening, the ladies sang and made music in Margherita’s chambers in front of a small inner-courtyard audience for the «Madrigali segreti», which were kept secret from the public. Only after years of complete privacy, did the prince allow selected musicians such as Monteverdi and di Lasso access to the Concerti delle Donne and, thus, the «Modell Ferrara» gradually expanded. The Tyrolean harpist, Margret Köll brings Margherita’s «Concerti segreti» back to life, together with an ensemble of exquisite singers and instrumentalists.
