In the late-night concert «Die blaue Stunde,» the Italian-Irish musician Giovanna Baviera, who was recently featured with Voces Suaves at the Festwochen, presents her personal approach to reviving the self-accompanied singing on the viola da gamba.

Alone with her viola da gamba and her own voice, she assumes different roles – that of the singer, the gambist, the accompanist – integrating them into a single, fluid performance. She revives the vibrant and nuanced art of «cantar alla viola.» A constant exchange of roles fitting for a space between indoors and outdoors, for the hour between day and night.

The program weaves together historical repertoire such as English music for voice and lyra viol, polyphonic chansons by Sandrin and Arcadelt, and Italian monodies by Caccini and Luzzaschi with contemporary music composed specifically for Giovanna Baviera, including pieces by Simon MacHale and the Austrian composer Eva Reiter.
