In 1658 Jakob (Jacobus) Stainer was appointed official violin maker at the Innsbruck Court, which also led to the most important violinists of the time visiting his workshop. Giovanni Buonaventura Viviani, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli and even Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber travelled to Tyrol to meet this master of violin making and to purchase the instruments. The encounters were very inspiring experiences for the virtuosos and inspired them to take the art of violin playing to undreamt-of heights. Stainer, this way learned from the demands of great violinists and thus revolutionise violin making in terms of tonal quality and improved playability. The results will be presented by the ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria, led by Gunar Letzbor, one of the most creative and active newcomers to the Austrian Early Music Scene.
