The baritone José Antonio López is a versatile singer who moves smoothly between styles and eras, dividing his activity between concerts, opera and recitals, always paying great attention to the use of his voice to best bring out the music. In the concert field, his recent debut in the LA Phil season with Gustavo Dudamel, as well as his engagements with orchestras such as the Cincinnati Symphony (Messiah and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony), Rotterdam Philharmonic, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Dresdner Festspieleorchester, Antwerp Symphony, BBC Symphony and Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, La Cetra Barockorchester, Budapest Festival or Nacional de España, in halls such as the Berliner Philharmonie, Laeiszhalle, Konzerthaus and Musikverein of Vienna, Barbican or Mozarteum of Salzburg, or soon in the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, accredit his great moment.
José Antonio López has been conducted by great maestros such as Afkham, Boreyko, Bolton, Conlon, Dudamel, Iván Fischer, Heras-Casado, Luisotti, Maazel, Marcon, Marriner, Mena, Noseda, Pablo Pérez, Pollini, Pons, Rouset, Shani, and Suzuki, among others.
He is also a devoted Lieder performer, having been accompanied by Maurizio Pollini at the Theater an der Wien, Daniel Heide, Iain Burnside or Rubén Fernández Aguirre. He recently made his debut in the Ciclo de Lied of the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
Recent years have witnessed a great growth in his lyrical activity, in which the operas of Handel and contemporary music have an important presence (leading roles in the premieres of Mauricio Sotelo’s El Público and Luis de Pablo’s El Abrecartas at the Teatro Real in Madrid or Benet Casablancas’s L’enigma di Lea at the Liceo in Barcelona), but also Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner (Der fliegende Holländer in Valencia and Meistersinger at the Teatro Real) and Strauss (Ariadne auf Naxos in Barcelona and Salome in Mérida), among others. He has recently made his debut at the Opéra de Lausanne, at the Halle Händel Festspiele, at the SWR Schwetzinger Festspiele, and will soon make his debut at the Innsbrucker Festwochen.
