Tobie Miller, a Canadian hurdy-gurdy player, recorder player and singer, grew up in a family of classically trained musicians. After studying performance practice in early music at McGill University in Montreal, she moved to Basel, Switzerland, where she continued her studies at the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Her work in Basel was supported by scholarships from the Canadian Cultural Council and the J.B.C. Watkins Award. In addition, she received another grant from the Canadian Cultural Council in 2011-2012 for her work on the baroque hurdy-gurdy and her transcriptions of Bach's solo works for cello and violin for the hurdy-gurdy, a selection of which was released on CD by the Raumklang label in 2018.
Tobie Miller is now permanently based in Basel, where she continues to perform and record CDs, both as a soloist and with various ensembles, such as the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (recording of Haydn and Mozart concertos for the Laborie label), Les Musiciens de Saint Julien (recordings for Alpha), Per-Sonat (for the Christophorus label), Le Miroir de Musique (Ricercar), Leones (Christophorus and Naxos), and of course with her own groups, La Rota and Ensemble Danguy. The debut CD of the Ensemble Danguy, "La Belle Vielleuse", with 18th-century sonatas for hurdy-gurdy, was released in 2017 by Ricercar and received great critical acclaim. This was followed in 2019 by "Les Saisons amusantes" with Nicolas Chedevilles' arrangements of six concertos from Vivaldi's Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione op. 8 for hurdy-gurdy and ensemble, and finally in 2024 by "Le Berger innocent" with instrumental works and cantatas featuring soprano Monika Mauch.
As one of the very few hurdy-gurdy players who came to this instrument via early music, Tobie Miller is now considered an outstanding virtuoso on the baroque hurdy-gurdy and performs in various formations; among others, in a duo with another hurdy-gurdy player, but also with well-known conductors such as Jordi Savall, Christophe Coin and Wieland Kuijken. In addition to her intensive concert activities, she also teaches regularly at workshops and festivals such as the Over the Water Hurdy Gurdy Festival (2005-2010), Les Journées de La Flûte à Bec (2006), Asociaci òn Ibérica de la Zanfona (2010, 2015), Sherborne Early Music Society (2015) and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (2008, 2012). In 2015, she was also invited as a soloist to the 11th International Zona de la Zanfona Festival in Galicia.
