It is the ever-recurring song of despair: «I love you! Why don’t you love me?» Sung many times a day every day in all ages and worlds. And soul-stirringly set to music by composers of all eras and styles. Two young singers, French soprano Suzanne Jerosme and American countertenor Eric Jurenas – both highly successful participants in the Cesti Competition and Barockoper:Jung – return to the Festival to sing a story of awakened love, rapt devotion, sudden disappointment and desperate grief told by baroque arias, songs and duets. Anyone who has ever heard the Spartan princess Télaïre’s lament for her buried lover Castor from Rameau’s opera «Castor et Pollux» or Dowland’s song «In darkness let me dwell» from the «Funeral Teares» collection, knows about the innermost feelings and the pain of those who suffer heartbreak.

Time stands still, for minutes, hours and years, when one’s eye falls on the face of the beloved. All things change, only she remains the same. «Pur ti miro» («I gaze at you») is the beginning of one of the most beautiful love duets in operatic history from Monteverdi’s «L’Incoronazione di Poppea». The arrow of the god of love leaves desperate as well as happy people in its wake.
